Healdsburg...Day 1 in our RV

We traveled only 212 miles from home, but have found ourselves worlds away in the quaint little town of Healdsburg.

We are camped in a very peaceful setting, right on the Russian River. A perfect spot for our first two nights on the road.
After setting up camp, we headed into town. Our wine stop was The Shed. Described as, "Local food-focused outfit hosting a market, cafe & fermentation bar in a modern setting with events." It was delightful, sitting outside, absorbing it all.

After its founding in 1857, Healdsburg was surrounded by a soil so rich that it could grow virtually any crop, and it was on its way to winemaking acclaim when prohibition forced a detour into prune farming, in 1919. Prunes proved such a cash crop that it took 50 years for winemaking to take hold again in the region. To the delight of wine lovers everywhere, wine has at last returned as the lifeblood of this still quaint and rustic town. Its influence is seen everywhere. AND it made me laugh... Maybe it was just the wine!

Dinner was at the Bear Republic, sitting in the glorious sunshine. While there, I received a text from Jenny in Tahoe, "At the Lake watching two boats being thrashed by huge waves and turned over. Boats are goners. Arg. And it's snowing." I guess we headed out at the right time. We are so loving this trip, and it's only Day 1.

Upstairs in the Shed is where my niece's night-before-the-wedding dinner was held. ( ALL 200 or so wedding guests were invited!). Cool place. Ingrid and I walked around everywhere.

The storm had us on the edge of our seats at the Beacon restaurant, as a huge squall blew in from the east... A sailboat with 3 people and a pup aboard was fighting to stay upright, crashing about in high wind & waves. After a couple of hours, they were able to come in close enough to be rescued by a man who kayaked fitst to a Zodiac dingy (oh, it was snowing too), and then was able to transfer them to shore. Two moored speedboats went down. Crazy. What a different world 212 miles makes. Enjoy The beautiful redwoods and coast.
