David Foster, The Sculptor's 'La Vita Italiana'

David Foster is an international artist and sculptor specializing in traditional and contemporary fine art applications.  Tonight, he shared with us his life in the little Tuscan town of Pietrasanta, Italy, as he has followed in the footsteps of Michelangelo.

Pietrasanta is a small community of approximately 10,000 inhabitants on the northwest coast of Italy, only 20 miles from Pisa and 60 miles from Florence. It is situated at the base of the Apuan Alps, which possess the precious white marble quarried by the ancient Romans, Michelangelo, and sought by contemporary artists today. For centuries, Pietrasanta's economy has revolved around its nearby quarries and the craftsmanship of its sculpture and architectural stone artisans. Today, it is still a thriving marble artisan community with 20 marble carving studios and four bronze foundries. After seeing David's presentation, Steve and I are so disappointed we did not explore this area when we were in Italy.
We learned a great deal about the art of sculpting and this very talented man. We also had our fond Italian memories evoked.  It was a great presentation. Bravo!
